Acquired by Rushnell Family Services in 1974 from the Bush family, the original building was erected in 1879, as a private residence for the late James W. Dunnett, a business merchant and former Mayor of the City of Belleville from 1884 - 1885.
The classic Victorian style of architecture features a winding staircase which ascends to the third floor of the building. Several of the parlor rooms have grand fireplaces made of imported marble.
John R. “Jack” Bush purchased the property at 80 Highland Avenue in the early 1950’s, and after extensive renovations and additions, was opened as a funeral home in 1956.
John R. Bush Funeral Home had it's beginning as The Belleville Burial Company, the first funeral service provider in Belleville, established in 1914, by the late Joseph Imlaw.
