Condolence: Anyone who knew my grandfather knows of his generosity, work ethic, selflessness and sense of humor. His ability to control a room and make everyone smile or burst out in laughter was incredible. He demonstrated these traits on a daily basis and the positive effect that he had on people was truly astounding. His dedication and the impact that he had on his friends, family and the community will be forever remembered.

Condolence: To Marg, I’m so sorry to hear about Earl’s passing. Earl was such a fascinating individual, and knew so much about so many different things and didn’t mind sharing his knowledge with his friends. I always enjoyed spending time with him, and listening to his many stories of his travels and different things that happened along the way. It was always a pleasure when he showed me his many treasures that he had collected over the years relating to not only the military, but musical instruments as well, and model airplanes that he had built. He knew that I lived on Nautical Lane, and that I really enjoyed “nautical” themes—so he gave me a beautiful model ship (the Constitution), also a model of the “Bluenose,” and numerous types of glasses with beautiful etchings of various ships on them. I will cherish those gifts he gave me forever. I often think of the time that I played one of his accordions at the Hewison residence, and even as his health wasn’t the greatest at that time, he had a smile ear to ear, apparently really enjoying listening to my music. When he was in the hospital in Trenton, and Kingston, I would visit him and even though when he was having some difficult times, he would usually always end up making a joke about something and try to put a smile on other people’s faces. Earl liked to make other people laugh, and over the last few years, we shared many laughs together. It was a great time when you and Earl came to my house Marg, to celebrate Earl’s birthday. At the end of the dinner, I played Happy Birthday to him on my alto saxophone—I chuckled as he said he liked it better played on the bag-pipes!! (not one of my favourite instruments) but definitely one of his, and I respected that. A great man like Earl doesn’t come along everyday, that’s for sure. Everybody that knew Earl and was lucky enough to be around him, admired him so much, as I did too. Earl will be missed but not forgotten. Thinking of you Marg. Norm Johnstone

Condolence From: Karl Kjarsgaard
Condolence: To the Family and Friends of Earl Hewison, Please accept our sincerest condolences from all the Directors and members of the Bomber Command Museum of Canada in Nanton, Alberta on Earl’s passing. He will be sorely missed by all of us. Earl was appreciated by our museum , not only for his service in the Royal Canadian Air Force, but also for his years of determination, excellence, and resourcefulness as the founder and main driving force behind the creation and building of The RCAF Memorial Museum which we all know now as The National Air Force Museum of Canada. All the gathering and saving of aircraft along with the thousands of RCAF and aviation treasures started, in the museum’s first and formative years, because of the vision and resourcefulness of Earl’s acquisitions and, yes, even “liberations” of said treasures for a national RCAF museum. I would like Earl’s family, and all others who were not there, to know I was the vice-president and project manager for the underwater recovery of Halifax NA337 from Norway in 1995, which has since become a crown jewel of the museum’s collection in Trenton. With our successful recovery of Canada’s first Halifax, the Halifax Project Directors had to decide on a new home for NA337 where she could be rebuilt and displayed in all her glory. It was unanimous in our decision that The RCAF Memorial Museum would be that new home and it was one man alone who convinced us of that decision of the best home for the Halifax, not by his words but by his deeds, talents, and connections, Earl Hewison. We must always remember those among us who have been our past leaders or founders of great and valuable movements or organizations, where their vision and passion have led us to where we are now, and for all our years to come. We are sure there is more about Earl that we would like to know and appreciate but let us all agree on his great value and worth as a person and talented RCAF historian. BLUE SKIES forever Earl, we will miss you. Sincerely, Karl Kjarsgaard – Director Bomber Command Museum of Canada Nanton, Alberta
