The Memorial Candle Program has been designed to help offset the costs associated with the hosting this Tribute Website in perpetuity. Through the lighting of a memorial candle, your thoughtful gesture will be recorded in the Book of Memories and the proceeds will go directly towards helping ensure that the family and friends of Robert Koning can continue to memorialize, re-visit, interact with each other and enhance this tribute for future generations.

Thank you.

Condolence: Stacey and Family,
On behalf of the staff and management at PTG Oshawa, please accept our deepest sympathies during your time of loss. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family during this difficult time.
Many of us worked with Rob during his time in the Pickering facility. He was a gentle soul and a wonderful technician.
He will be greatly missed.

Condolence: Robert Koning

Rita and I met Rob and Stacey through our neighbor Richard and Nicole. We shared a lot of interests in conversations around vehicles and ridiculous service procedures, fishing and all the hot spots.
Rob demonstrated his dance moves in Picton one night when we were celebrating a night at the Royal Hotel and then ended up at Alley Cats. Richard Wolters and I never laughed so hard as Rob would never say no and ended up on the dance floor with a group he didn’t know but still laughed with the best of them.
We would get together for Poker Night anywhere from 7 to 9 players and Rob could hold a poker face. One night we had some new players and this new player was learning the rules of Poker and low and behold she had four of a kind and Rob was able to tell her that is not a very good hand. We did give in and gave the winnings to the winner but the laughter at the table was always something to remember.

Mental Illness Awareness Week and World Mental Health Day provide an opportunity for us to reflect on the importance of mental health in our everyday lives and what we can do to support people living with mental illness. Consider the following statistics:
• One in three Canadians will experience a mental illness or substance use disorder in their lifetime;
• More than 10 Canadians die by suicide each day;
• Suicide rates among Indigenous youth are among the highest in the world;
• Only 57% of Canadian adults and 43% of Canadian youth report a high capacity to cope with unexpected and difficult problems and day-to-day demands
• Hardship, trauma, family violence and stigma have been linked to an increased risk of suicide, substance use and mental illness.

To Ryan and Andrew remember your father for who he was and the memories you have with him as you take the next step in the journey of life with mom. Be sure to talk to mom and family members about your feelings and emotions. Remember to always ask for help when and if you need it.
To Stacey, May the road rise to meet you, may the wind be always at your back, may the sunshine warm upon your face. The rains fall soft upon your fields. And until we meet again May God hold you in the palm of his hand.
